We’re getting married on 27 May, and we would really love you to be there.

It’s a short ceremony at the register office in Horsham, then we’re all heading up onto the South Downs for a long lunch at the Devil’s Dyke pub. On a clear day you can see all the way to the sea.

Children and dogs are welcome. Everything you need should be on this page: times, places, food, lifts, and a few ideas if you’re making a trip of it. If anything’s missing, just ask us.

Lots of love,Tim & Djilly

      Making a trip of it?

Horsham sits between the woods of the Weald and the South Downs, with Brighton and the sea not far away. A few ideas, with rough driving times from Horsham.

      Gardens & wild places

      Knepp Wildland 15 min
A huge rewilding estate just south of Horsham. Book a safari to look for white storks, nightingales and the free-roaming longhorn cattle and pigs.
      Leonardslee Gardens 15 min
Lakes and woodland, with rhododendrons and azaleas in full flower in late May. There are wallabies too. Really.
      Nymans 20 min
A National Trust garden around a romantic, half-ruined house near Handcross.
      Wakehurst 30 min
Kew’s wild botanic garden: woodland walks, meadows and the Millennium Seed Bank.

      Up on the Downs

      Devil’s Dyke you’ll be there
Come early or stay late for the walk along the ridge. On a clear day there’s the sea one way and the whole Weald the other.
      Chanctonbury Ring 30 min
An Iron Age hill fort crowned with beech trees, above Steyning. A lovely, slightly eerie walk.
      Ditchling Beacon 35 min
One of the highest points on the Downs, with huge views and the pretty village of Ditchling just below.

      By the sea

      Brighton 40 min
The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion, the pier, and fish and chips on the pebbles.
      Seven Sisters about 1 hr
White chalk cliffs at Cuckmere Haven, best seen from the coast path at Seaford Head.

      Towns, houses & wine

      Horsham right here
The old Causeway, Horsham Museum (free) and the park right next to the register office.
      Arundel 35 min
A castle, a cathedral and a river, all in one small hill town.
      Petworth House 30 min
A grand National Trust house with Turner paintings and a deer park.
      Vineyards 20–35 min
Bolney Wine Estate and Ridgeview both run tours and tastings of English sparkling wine. Our French friends may be pleasantly surprised.

      Coming from abroad?

      You’ll probably need an ETA

Most visitors who don’t need a visa, including all EU citizens, now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they travel to the UK. That covers French passports too, and every child and baby.

      • It costs £20 per person (the price at the time of writing).
      • Apply on the official UK ETA app or at gov.uk/eta. You usually get an answer within 3 working days, often much sooner.
      • It lasts 2 years, or until your passport expires.
      • Only use the official site. Copycat sites charge more for exactly the same thing.
      • Bring your passport: EU ID cards are no longer accepted at the UK border.
      • Irish citizens don’t need one.
      Apply on GOV.UK

      Getting here

      By plane
Gatwick is about 20 minutes from Horsham by train or car. Heathrow is roughly an hour away.
      By Eurostar
From London St Pancras, Thameslink trains run direct to Horsham in about an hour and a quarter.
      By car from France
The Dieppe–Newhaven ferry lands half an hour from Brighton and about an hour from Horsham. Through the tunnel, allow about 1 hr 45 from Folkestone. And we drive on the left!
      To the pub
There’s no station nearby, so share a car or book a taxi from Brighton or Hassocks.

      Gifts

Honestly, having you there is plenty.
